Becoming a dealer — FAQs

Do I need to be a licensed tradesperson?

You do not strictly need to be a trade professional (such as a plumber or electrician) to apply or become an Authorised Zane Dealer, though existing trade qualifications are highly valued. Many successful Zane dealers are licensed plumbers, electricians, or pool builders, but non-trade applicants with relevant pool industry experience are also welcome to apply.

Requirements and installation procedures vary depending on trade status and state regulations:

  • Queensland (QLD) QBCC Requirements - In Queensland, a Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) licence is legally required for carrying out pool construction, installation, and maintenance work valued over $3,300 (inclusive of labour and materials). Non-trade dealers operating in QLD must hold or work under an appropriately licensed QBCC contractor class to perform or contract for these installs.
  • Licensing Requirements - Any regulated electrical wiring (such as mains connections for controllers or heat pumps) or specialized plumbing alterations must legally be performed by appropriately licensed tradespeople under relevant state building and trade regulations.
  • Handling Installations for Non-Trade Dealers - Non-trade dealers can oversee sales, system design, roof absorber assembly, and general mounting. For regulated tasks requiring specific trade licenses or QBCC oversight, non-trade dealers sub-contract or partner with qualified local licensed tradespeople to carry out and sign off on the work.
  • Zane Training & Certification - All new dealers—regardless of trade background—receive comprehensive product design, sizing, and installation training directly from Zane. Once qualified, you will be authorized to size systems, complete Warranty Commissioning Checklists, and issue official Zane Warranty Certificates for your clients.
Is there a protected territory?

Yes, Zane operates on a designated geographical territory structure designed to manage local demand allocation and protect dealer investment.

  • Designated Service Areas - Dealers are assigned specific geographical zones or regional postcodes based on population density, residential pool concentration, and local market potential.
  • Local Demand Allocation - Customer inquiries submitted through Zane's central website, national 1300 number, or marketing campaigns are automatically directed to the authorized dealer assigned to that designated territory.
  • Exclusive Market Coverage - Establishing clear territories prevents market saturation, ensures dealers do not compete against each other for local leads, and gives applicants a sustainable customer base to build their local pool heating business.
What's the cost or investment to get started?

Zane Pool Heating operates on a licensed dealership model rather than a traditional franchise, meaning there are no ongoing franchise royalties or hidden membership fees.

The initial setup investment is designed to be transparent so you can pre-qualify and plan your launch effectively:

  • No Franchise Joining Fees - Unlike traditional franchise systems, you are not buying into a franchise structure, keeping your upfront entry costs lower.
  • Initial Stock & Equipment Investment - Your primary initial investment goes directly into working assets—including a core inventory (such as solar absorber rolls, controllers, vacuum relief valves, pipe and fittings), essential trade fitting tools, and initial safety equipment for working at heights.
  • Display & Marketing Materials - This may cover official Zane branding assets, product display stands, printed brochures, and vehicle signage to establish your local market presence immediately.
  • Working Capital & Mobile Setup - New dealers should budget for standard business setup requirements, including an appropriate service vehicle (van or ute), QBCC/state trade licensing, public liability insurance, and basic working capital to support day-to-day operations.
What training and support is provided?

As a Zane dealer, you are backed by an established management team under Waterco Ltd, ensuring you have the technical expertise and operational backing needed to grow a successful business.

The onboarding and ongoing support program includes:

  • Product & Technical Training - Extensive hands-on instruction covering Zane's full product portfolio—including Gulfstream & Gulfpanel solar absorber systems, Electroheat pool heat pumps, gas heaters, controllers, and pool blankets. You will learn precise heat load calculation methods, roofing layout techniques, hydraulic sizing, and commissioning procedures to ensure compliant, high-performing installations.
  • Sales & Consultation Training - Step-by-step guidance on conducting professional site assessments, presenting tailored customer quotes, and utilising Zane's digital sizing tools to demonstrate energy savings and seasonal extension options to pool owners.
  • National Lead Generation & Marketing Support - Direct access to qualified consumer inquiries generated through Zane's national 1300 number, website quote request engine, and digital campaigns. Dealers also receive official branding assets, showroom displays, vehicle signage templates, and co-op marketing resources.
  • Ongoing Field & Technical Assistance - Back-office engineering and technical support from Waterco's pool heating specialists. For complex residential layouts or large commercial projects, our technical teams may assist with custom system design, hydraulic sizing help, and troubleshooting.
How soon could I start?

The onboarding process typically takes up to 4 weeks from application & territory approval to fully operational status, depending on your current business setup and trade licensing.

  • Application & Territory Approval - Initial contact with Waterco/Zane to discuss open territories, review your business background, and approve your designated service area.
  • Licensing & Insurance Verification - Ensuring all required business insurances, working-at-heights safety certifications, and state trade licenses (such as a QBCC licence for Queensland operators) are in order.
  • Product & Technical Training - Completing Zane's intensive onboarding program, which covers heat load design, hydraulic sizing, hands-on installation techniques, and commissioning report procedures.
  • Stock & Marketing Rollout - Setting up your initial inventory, receiving branded assets, and configuring your local lead distribution channels so you can accept customer inquiries immediately upon training completion.
