Troubleshooting

Common issues & quick checks

Try these first. If the issue persists, your local dealer can diagnose it properly — don't attempt electrical or plumbing repairs yourself.

My pool isn't heating

If your pool isn't heating as expected, run through these quick initial checks before calling for support:

  • Controller Settings - Ensure your controller is turned on and set to a target temperature higher than your current pool water temperature.
  • Pump & Flow - Check that your pool pump is running smoothly and water is actively circulating through the heating system.
  • Energy Source -
    • Solar Heating - Confirm your roof sensors are getting direct, adequate sunlight.
    • Heat Pump - Verify the main power supply is connected and the unit isn't displaying an error code.
    • Gas Heater - Ensure your gas supply line is turned on and the pilot/ignition is functioning.

Still Not Heating? If all of these settings look correct and your system is still not heating, your local dealer can help diagnose the issue.

Give us a call at 1300 009 263 or reach out directly to your local Zane dealer to schedule a service check.

The solar controller shows an error or won't turn on

If your solar controller screen won't power on or is showing an error message, work through these initial troubleshooting checks:

  1. Power Supply Checks
    • Main Outlet - Verify the controller unit is fully plugged into a working 240V mains power outlet.
    • Safety Switches - Check your home's main switchboard to ensure the circuit breaker or RCD safety switch for the pool equipment hasn't tripped.
    • Device Outlet - Confirm the solar pump plug is securely seated in the socket at the base of the controller.
  2. Sensor & Cable Inspections
    • Roof & Pool Sensors - Solar controllers rely on temperature sensors installed on your roof and in the pool pipework. Ensure the sensor leads are tightly plugged into their terminals on the bottom of the unit.
    • Physical Damage - Visually inspect the sensor cables for any breaks, loose connections, or damage caused by cockatoos, pests, or garden maintenance. A disconnected or severed sensor wire will trigger an error reading.
  3. Controller Reset & Diagnostic Steps
    • Hard Power Reset - Turn off the power outlet, wait 60 seconds to clear the unit's internal memory, and turn the power back on.
    • Manual Over-ride Mode - Switch the controller from Auto mode to Manual / On. If the solar pump turns on immediately, the controller electronics are functioning, and the issue likely sits with temperature threshold settings or sensor readings.
    • Error Codes - If the display screen shows a specific code, consult the error diagnostic table in your specific controller model's manual.

If the screen remains completely blank after checking power, or if an error code persists after a hard reset, contact your local Zane dealer or call 1300 009 263 for technical support.

My heat pump is noisy or icing up

It can be concerning when your pool heat pump starts making unusual sounds or develops a layer of ice, but in many cases, this is actually a normal part of how the system operates.

Here is how to tell normal operation from a fault, along with quick checks to keep your unit running quietly and efficiently:

Ice Formation: Defrost Mode vs. A System Fault

  • Normal Defrost Cycle - During cooler weather (especially in shoulder months or winter), frost or light ice can naturally build up on the evaporator coils as the unit extracts heat from the air. When this happens, your heat pump automatically enters a Defrost Cycle. You may hear the fan stop running, notice a change in the compressor sound, or see steam rising from the unit as it melts the ice. This cycle typically lasts 5 to 10 minutes, after which normal heating resumes.
  • Potential Fault (Heavy Icing) - If the unit becomes completely encased in thick ice for long periods, or fails to melt the ice after repeated cycles, it may indicate a system fault (such as a refrigerant issue, sensor fault, or extremely low ambient temperatures).

Noise & Airflow Checks

  • Normal Operational Sounds - Heat pumps produce a low hum from the compressor and a steady fan noise while moving air. Sound levels can fluctuate depending on whether the unit is ramping up to reach temperature or running in low-speed energy-saving mode.
  • Clearance & Airflow - Ensure there are no leaves, lawn debris, garden clutter, or overhanging bushes blocking the fan grille or coil fins. Reduced airflow starves the unit of heat, causing excess icing, efficiency drops, and increased fan noise as the motor works harder.
  • Vibration Noise - Check that the heat pump is sitting level on a solid concrete or mounting pad and that the rubber anti-vibration feet are intact. Loose casing screws or pipes vibrating against surrounding walls can also create loud rattling noises.

When to Book a Service Call
If your heat pump is making harsh metallic grinding, clanking, or loud rattling noises, or if ice builds up solid and won't clear via automatic defrost, turn the unit off and contact your local dealer.

How do I get the most out of my system?

Maximising the efficiency of your solar pool heating system comes down to keeping heat in the pool, running your system at optimal times, and maintaining the equipment.

Here are the key ways to get the absolute most out of your setup:

  1. Pair Your Solar System with a Thermal Pool Cover

Solar panels collect abundant energy during sunny days, but an uncovered pool loses up to 75% of its total heat overnight through evaporation.

    • Using a quality solar or thermal pool cover acts as a blanket, trapping the heat gained during the day and preventing evaporation.
    • Combining solar heating with a pool cover gives you the highest possible temperature gains and extends your swimming season into the shoulder months.
  2. Set a Sensible Target Temperature
    • Set your automatic solar controller to a realistic, comfortable temperature (typically between 26Β°C and 29Β°C for active swimming).
    • Setting the target temperature excessively high causes your pump to run continuously during marginal sunlight, wasting electricity for minimal heat gain.
    • Let your controller handle the workβ€”in Auto Mode, it will continuously monitor roof vs. pool water temperatures and only circulate water when free solar energy is actively available.
  3. Schedule an Annual Service Check

To keep your system running at peak hydraulic efficiency and protect your roof array from premature wear:

    • Pre-Season Inspection - Book a check-up in early spring before your main swimming season begins.
    • Filter & Strainer Maintenance - Clean skimmer baskets, solar strainers, and main pool filters regularly. Clogged filters restrict flow rates, forcing the booster pump to work harder and reducing heat transfer from roof absorbers.
    • Roof Array Check - Have a professional inspect roof absorbers, vacuum relief valves, and pipe fixings for bird damage, leaf blockages, or minor leaks.
